U.S. 'deeply concerned' about Hong Kong activists held in China: Pompeo

Sep. 12, WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday the United States is deeply concerned about 12 Hong Kong democracy activists being held in China’s Guangdong province, saying they have been denied access to lawyers and local authorities have not provided information on their welfare or the charges against them.


The United States questions the Hong Kong leadership’s commitments to protecting citizens’ rights, Pompeo said in a statement. The activists were arrested about two weeks ago off the coast of Hong Kong, according to the statement.

At the end of August the provincial Coast Guard Bureau said in a post on its social media site that it had arrested at least 10 people after intercepting a boat off the cost of the southern province of Guangdong. Hong Kong media, citing unidentified sources, said the 12 were headed to Taiwan to apply for political asylum.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said earlier this week that if they “were arrested for breaching mainland offences then they have to be dealt with according to the mainland laws.”

“We question Chief Executive Lam’s stated commitment to protecting the rights of Hong Kong residents, and call on authorities to ensure due process,” Pompeo said....     more

Swedish parliament member Magnus Jacobsson tweeted that he nominated the governments of the United States, Serbia and Kosovo 'for their joint work for peace and economic development, through the cooperation agreement signed in the White House. Trade and communications are important building blocks for peace.'

Serbian President Aleksander Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti signed an economic normalization deal at the White House last week that also calls for Belgrade to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and for mutual recognition by Israel and Kosovo...     more

Sep. 10 - FREELAND, MI -- President Donald Trump railed against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s record on the economy and promised a quick recovery while campaigning in Michigan on Thursday.
Trump claimed he “saved the U.S. auto industry,” and touted his rewrite of the North American Free Trade Agreement, claiming Biden allowed jobs to leave the country. Biden just one day prior visited Michigan himself to unveil his plan to boost job growth. Both candidates visited counties Trump flipped in 2016, playing a key role in helping him become the first Republican to win Michigan in nearly three decades.


“From Grand Rapids to Saginaw, from Kalamazoo to Mackinac and from Flint to right here in Freeland ... This is the state where tough, strong, determined workers made America into the greatest and most powerful nation in the history of the world.” Trump said toward the end of his 1-hour-and-20 minute speech.
Biden and his supporters have highlighted his work to support Michigan during the 2009 bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, and to support Detroit during its bankruptcy. Michigan Democrats have often said Biden “saved” the auto industry...     more

If Woodward is right, Trump let Americans die for political gains

Sep. 11 - U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has been uniquely fraught with scandal. As expected, there's been dozens of books published about his presidency. Through them, we've learned (allegedly) that Trump didn't want nor expect his presidential campaign to win, that he went to the movies while his brother died alone in a hospital and that the White House has "no coherent basis, no strategy, no philosophy." The president also concealed the danger of the coronavirus from the public, according to journalist Bob Woodward's upcoming book, "Rage."

Woodward pieces together a very disturbing timeline of events in regards to Trump's private attitude toward the spread of the coronavirus. They detail exactly how much the presidency was aware of the dangers while publicly downplaying it.
 
"I wanted to always play it down," Trump allegedly told Woodward on March 19, adding "I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic." As the president began urging states to reopen in April, he had allegedly told Woodward "it's so easily transmissible, you wouldn't even believe it."

And most disturbingly, while the president repeatedly said that children are "almost immune" when discussing his desire for schools to reopen, he privately told Woodward on one occasion that "just today and yesterday, some startling facts came out. It's not just old, older. Young people too – plenty of young people."...     more

How 2020 election could affect US’ global standing

Sep. 10 - ...The atmosphere in which the election is taking place is again, sadly, not new. Violence and “law and order” is not a new theme (just think of 1968), but the ferocity associated with events following the death of George Floyd feels different and it illustrates the new power of personal media and its focused messaging. These have two rather frightening potential consequences for US watchers. Firstly, the number of armed militias, with non-uniform uniforms, prepared to act as judge and jury according to an agenda they set themselves. We have always known that the US has the highest number of civilian guns per capita in the world — it needs a consensual social contract in place to ensure something doesn’t go wrong. And, secondly, the risk of an election result not being accepted by one party or another, claiming fraud and malpractice, leaching into the situation of arms and agendas, ending that social contract. An unresolved election is high on our list of worries at present...     source

South China Sea: Beijing begins HUGE military upgrade in face-off with ‘provocative’ US
CHINA has embarked upon a military upgrade as increasing tensions with the US spark fears of an all out war.

Sep. 9 - In order improve the quality of its missions in South China Sea, China has made improvements to some of the equipment used by their world class military. The latest upgrade was spotted at a naval aviation regiment base under the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command.

China’s KJ-500 airborne early warning and control system has now been improved ahead of what is expected to be a major clash with the US.

The system now has the addition of a probe that can allow the plane to receive aerial refuelling and boost its range and endurance.


The new airborne allows China to carry out early warning operations, analysts explained on Monday.


The latest upgrade was spotted in a picture recently published by China Military Online, the English webpage of the Chinese military.


Ramping up its endurance means the aircraft will have enhanced combat proficiency as World War 3 fears reach an all time high...     more

Sep. 9 - Donald Trump has told his cheering supporters in North Carolina that 'the economy will collapse' if Joe Biden is elected in November, warning that 'mob rule' will take over the United States.

Speaking in Winston-Salem on Tuesday night, the president enjoyed riffing off his familiar themes of chaos in Democrat-run cities and the mental stability of his opponent.

'Biden's plan is to appease the domestic terrorists. My plan is to arrest them,' he said.

Biden's lead over Trump is the steadiest on record

Sep. 8,  (CNN)New CBS News/YouGov polls reveal that former Vice President Joe Biden maintains his grip on the 2020 race for president.

Biden's up 52% to 42% over President Donald Trump among likely voters nationally, and he has a 50% to 44% edge over Trump in the key battleground state of Wisconsin as well.

Biden's 10 point and 6 point advantages are the exact same they were when CBS News/YouGov polled the contests before the party conventions.The polls are reflective of a race that barely budges even after two conventions, protests and unrest in some cities over police brutality and as the nation navigates the coronavirus pandemic.
