White House rejects House bill for emergency Postal Service aid
Bill moves to Senate; McConnell has criticized legislation as part of ‘conspiracy theory’

Aug. 23. - WASHINGTON — Help for the U.S. Postal Service landed in stalemate Sunday as the White House dismissed an emergency funding bill aimed at shoring up the agency before the November elections as “going nowhere” and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged senators to act quickly.

“The public is demanding action on this now,” Pelosi said. “I can’t see how the Senate can avoid it unless they do so to their peril.”     more

Pelosi's comments and the push from Democrats comes a day after U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testified, promising mail.

Trump slams Pelosi's $25BN USPS funding vote as a 'hoax' after the Democrat told voters to 'ignore' president's mail-in ballot warnings as House prepares for rare Saturday vote
House Democrats pushed Saturday for a $25B Post Office bill aimed at curbing disruption to mail delivery

Aug. 23 - President Trump on Saturday blasted House Democrats who were prepared to pass legislation that would send $25billion in emergency funds to the US Postal Service in the run-up to the November election.

‘Representatives of the Post Office have repeatedly stated that they DO NOT NEED MONEY, and will not make changes,’ the president tweeted on Saturday.

‘This is all another HOAX by the Democrats to give 25 Billion unneeded dollars for political purposes, without talking about the Universal Mail-In Ballot Scam that they are trying to pull off in violation of everything that our Country stands for...     more

"...Trump has sought to cast early doubt on the integrity of the election, and bringing up Pelosi, who is deeply unpopular with many Republicans, appeared aimed at motivating his base to vote.

Although the speaker of the House is third in line for the presidency, it is unclear how Pelosi would assume the office in the event of a disputed election. Congress ultimately holds the power to decide which state electors to accept and resolve disputes. If no candidate wins a majority, the House selects a winner, but must choose from the top three vote-getters.

In a preview of what Republicans will argue at their own convention next week, Trump hammered at the law-and-order theme he has embraced in response to protests and unrest in many cities, including Portland, Oregon.

He said police had been weakened in 'Democrat-run' cities and cited a spike in murders in Chicago, Minneapolis, New York and Philadelphia. He urged Americans to turn back 'radical left socialists and Marxists.'
He called protesters in Portland 'crazy'."

Senate Hearing on U.S. Postal Service
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testified before the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee on the U.S. Postal Service operations during COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 election. “As we head into the election season, I want to ensure this committee and the American public that the Postal Service is fully capable and committed to delivering the nation’s election mail securely and on time. This sacred duty is my number one priority between now and Election Day,” said Postmaster General DeJoy. In addition, he emphasized that no operational changes would take place until after the November elections. Throughout the virtual hearing, lawmakers asked about delays in mail delivery, Postal Service funding and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the agency.
Postmaster general Louis DeJoy and several Republican senators broke with the president to say voting by mail is safe

In a Friday US Senate hearing, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and several GOP Senators publicly broke with President Trump in endorsing mail-in voting as safe and secure.

DeJoy directly refuted Trump's argument that the Postal Service isn't financially equipped to process lots of ballots, noting that ballots will comprise a small fraction of their total volume.

DeJoy said he has voted by mail for years, stating: "The American public should be able to vote by mail and the Postal Service will support it."

Republican Senators, including Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, and Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, all praised the Postal Service's capacity and mail-in voting in their states.    Details

Poisoning of Putin opponent could test US-Moscow relationship

Aug. 21 -  The alleged poisoning of a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin this week drew immediate rebukes from U.S. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and will likely serve as another key test for President Trump’s relationship with the autocratic leader.

Alexei Navalny, considered the unofficial leader of the Russian opposition and a noted Putin critic, is reportedly in a coma and intensive care after drinking tea laced with poison. The news of his illness was a shocking reminder of Moscow’s brutality and a possible warning that the government is becoming increasingly bold in its actions against the opposition.

Donald Trump’s 2007 ‘Fan Letter’ To Vladimir Putin Revealed In Senate Intelligence Report

Aug. 18 - The Senate Intelligence Committee report released on Tuesday revealed a “fan letter” that Donald Trump wrote to Vladimir Putin in 2007, Raw Story reported.

“Dear President Putin,” the letter read. “Congratulations on being named Time magazine’s ‘Man of the Year’ — you definitely deserve it. As you probably have heard, I am a big fan of yours! Take care of yourself. With best wishes, Donald Trump.”
As noted by Forbes, Trump signed the letter with a thick marker, which he also used to underline the words, “I am a big fan of yours!”
Senate report on Russia blows a hole in Trump’s ‘hoax’ claims

Aug. 19 - A new, bipartisan report from the Senate Intelligence Committee confirms, unambiguously, that the Justice Department had good reason to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election. It also indicates that investigators were right to examine potential conspiracy with the Kremlin by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Again, this is a bipartisan report, not a partisan Democratic attack document. It is endorsed by Republican committee chairman (on leave), Richard Burr of North Carolina, by acting Chairman Marco Rubio of Florida, and by all other Republicans on the committee in addition to the committee Democrats.

The very first substantive words of the report say this: “The Committee found that the Russian government engaged in an aggressive, multi-faceted effort to influence, or attempt to influence, the outcome of the 2016 presidential election”...      more     https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/senate-report-on-russia-blows-a-hole-in-trumps-hoax-claims

Japan GDP And US/China Trade Talk Disappointments Stifle European Markets

Aug. 18 -Following a choppy performance last week, especially in Europe, investors sat on their hands at the start of Monday’s trading.

It was another weekend full of disappointments. Like the UK last Wednesday, Japan just posted its worst GDP contraction on record – though it’s a stark warning of how bad things are over here that the Japanese drop was 7.8% to the UK’s 20.4% for the April to June quarter.

Meanwhile the teased, but never officially confirmed, videoconference trade talks between the USA and China were postponed indefinitely. Reuters is reporting that the delay has come about due to scheduling conflicts and the need to allow Beijing more time to buy up American exports as dictated by the phase one deal. It’s hard to know had to take the delay – in a sense, given the chaos of the last couple of months it has at least prevented things from getting any worse.
Add in an empty economic calendar, and it was difficult for the European markets to get a feel for what direction they should be heading in...     more

Contractors hired by government officials to frame Donald Trump are “behind the fake news in mainstream media” and recent protests.

Aug. 15 - ..."This video was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.) One of the key tenets of PolitiFact is that the burden of proof is on the speaker. This video and its claims fall woefully short.

The ShadowGate narrative hinges on the allegations of two "whistleblowers," someone referred to by the first name of "Tore," who is described as a linguist and intelligence contractor for the U.S. Navy, and Patrick Bergy, who is described as a "PSYOP Program Developer" in cyber security for the U.S. Army.

US/China - The gloves are Off

Aug. 17 - The delay in the Phase 1 trade deal review (initially slated for Sat 15 Aug) will come as a disappointment though it was reported that it did not reflect any substantive problem with the trade deal, but rather to give China more time to increase purchases of US goods.  China's reported desire to include TikToK and WeChat restrictions to the discussions may have also played a part.  The Phase 1 review delay followed by President Trump's order for ByteDance to divest TikTok's US operations within 90 days and ending of a waiver allowing US companies to continue selling goods to Huawei, ratchets up tensions another notch.

China's 'Great Firewall' is going global03:13

China is exporting the Great Firewall as internet freedom declines around the world

Updated 0634 GMT (1434 HKT) November 2, 2018

Hong Kong (CNN)Speaking before an elite audience in Washington in March 2000, then US President Bill Clinton summarized much of Western thinking on the internet when he hailed a new century in which "liberty will be spread by cell phone and cable modem."

This would occur, Clinton said, despite the efforts of countries like China to fight the spread of information.
"Now there's no question China has been trying to crack down on the internet," Clinton said, his eyebrows arched as he neared the punchline. "Good luck! That's sort of like trying to nail jello to the wall."
In the decades since that speech, Clinton's jello comment has become a something of a dark joke among internet freedom advocates, as China continued to build up the Great Firewall, the world's most sophisticated system for controlling and surveilling the web.
A new report out this week shows that China is by far the most effective censor of the internet, and far from retreating, is exporting its model around the world.
